This was promised to us a long time ago, and it has now finally come to be. At the same time, the 20.000 file limit from before has also been removed (Improved)
Here is the proof:
The file was in addition, uploaded using the new OneDrive sync client!
(Dropped the file in the local cache and let the sync do its stuff)

The Custom Script setting (Default disabled)
‘
‘
As I have posted about before, during the end of 2014, beginning of 2015, a new security feature in SharePoint Online has been rolled out. The feature in itself is a great security feature if that is what you want.
Missing example:
Expected webparts:
Note: changes to this setting might take up to 24 hours to take effect.
In my previous post on this setting, I listed the missing features, however this is not all that will go missing. In addition, quite a few webparts will be gone from your SharePoint Online environment. This may or may not be expected by you and your users/editors/developers…
Below is the list of webparts that you will not find with the Custom script setting off/disabled.

This is an updated version of a popular blogpost that I posted in January 2013. It turned out to be one of the most visited posts and it still is (This one). This time I have updated the feature comparison list to show what is included in the different Office 365 plans and subscription levels that are available. It is not easy to find the information when you are looking to buy just the right plan for your organization.
My primary goal with this post is to again make it just a little bit easier to find what feature is included in what plan, what functionality is avaiable in which plan and most importantly, where is SharePoint Online included? 😉

Changing or mixing plans
As the needs of your organization change, you may need to change your Office 365 plan. You can switch from your current Office 365 subscription to another Office 365 subscription:
– In the same service family: For example, you can move from Office 365 Business Essentials to Office 365 Business Premium, or from Office 365 Enterprise E1 to Office 365 Enterprise E3.
– From a standalone plan: For example, you can move from Exchange Online Plan 1 to Office 365 Enterprise E1.
– To a different service family: For example, you can move from Office 365 Business Essentials to Office 365 Enterprise E3.
For information about how to change subscriptions, including how to move from a trial to a paid subscription, see Switch to a different Office 365 plan or subscription.
You can combine Enterprise, Business and standalone plans (e.g. Exchange Online Plan 1) within a single Office 365 account. However, existing limitations on the number of seats per plan do not change. For example, you can have up to 300 seats per plan on both Office 365 Business Essentials and Office 365 Business Premium, but an unlimited number of users on Exchange Online Plan 1. Education and Government plans cannot be combined with Enterprise, Business or standalone plans.

Ok, if you want to try out Sway within your organization, here it is. It popped up on the App Launcher just the other day.
(You can use this URL: https://sway.com/?o365=true and then sign in with your organizational account)
It is a preview, not fully operational yet but as many of you have seen, it works remarkably well!
Microsoft uses Sway in a lot of their presentations and they look great 🙂
I can give you a great example, at Ignite, Mark Kashman held a session the last day where he recapped all SharePoint content during the Conference in a Sway: http://aka.ms/sharepointUNPLUGGED
Try it out, remember that there are a few limitations though.
– I have found the ‘Import from PowerPoint’ to be really bad, it imports all objects one by one as a ‘slide’. Try it out and see for yourselves.
– Also, every time you press ‘Get started’ a new Sway is created, even you you do nothing more it will show up in the list.
In Sway preview you can set the permissions to be:
– Public
– People with the link
– My organization (Everyone)
– Just me
For now, this is fine, but eventually we will want to be able to add Groups of users or a select few.
You can add content easily be searching for it and just drag and drop it to the Sway Surface.
If you don’t like the design and don’t feel like spending time on making it just right, use the ‘Remix’ button.
Remix will apply a new design to the entire Sway, Headers, Colors, Formatting and all.

Recently, right-click functionality was introduced in SharePoint Online and OneDrive for Business both, it really is a great feature that simplifies the lives of all users.
I will show in Pictures what I mean, no more ‘three dots’ or select and then ‘three dots’ again. Now, with right-click, we can easily access the properties and functions to manage a file or folder simply by right-clicking on it. (I assume though, that the dots and More will be left in Place, not all devices have a right button…)
So, here is what its all about, right-click and you can now access:
Open in Word, Open in Word Online, Download, Share, Rename, Delete, Move or Copy, Version History, Properties, Check out, Follow, Workflows, Shared with and Compliance details.
This is how it looks:
1. Right-click in OneDrive for Business
2. Right-click in SharePoint Online
4. Caveat no 1 – Right-click breaks with Managed Metadata columns in view *
5. Caveat no 2 – Copy shortcut is gone
* Right-click does work with Content types, site columns with non Managed metadata datatypes and views with multiple columns
‘
1. Right-click in OneDrive for Business
‘
2. Right-click in SharePoint Online
3. Right-click on Multiselect
4. Caveat no 1 – Right-click breaks with Managed Metadata columns in view
Yes, add an Managed Metadata column is fine, but if you show it in a view, right-click breaks and goes back to IE default.
In the example below I created and added a column actually named Managed Metadata…
When the Managed Metadata based column is added to the view, right-click breaks.
5. Caveat no 2 – Copy shortcut is gone
This may not seem like a big deal…but for admins, developers or designers, this is a bit cumbersome. You often want to get the URL from a resource file (js, css or similar) and now you can’t. Type it in folks….
Thats it. The news is out.
Only me this time…
My team, my collegues and Mattias Gutke! A good friend!

This has been one of the major missing features in Office 365, one that many has asked for, it has been on the roadmap and ‘In Development’ and ‘Rolling Out’ for a very long time as well. Now it is HERE! In a ‘First Release’ tenant. (Coming to all tenants in due time) To use the limited roles, do this:
1. Go to the Office 365 Admin Portal https://portal.office.com/admin/default.aspx
2. Select Users -> Active Users
3. Locate a user using search
4. On the Righthand side, Click on Edit User Roles
5. Next, select Limited Admin Role and then check the roles you want the user to have, one or many.
Meg Ryan gets to be a SharePoint Admin only
6. Enter an alternate email, same as you do/did for a Global Administrator account
It cannot be a email address that residen within the tenant
7. Save and you are done!

Myself, I get all the credit this time! 🙂

Got trouble Connection PowerShell to SharePoint online? This could be the resolution to your troubles.
I had this myself, or we had it in our Company tenant. This is what the issue was and this is how I fixed it:
When trying to connect to PowerShell for SharePoint Online, using the Connect-SPOService command, we got a error that did not tell us anything.
The error is:
Connect-SPOService : For security reasons DTD is prohibited in this document. To enable DTD processing set DtdProcessing property on XmlReaderSettings to Parse and pass the settings into XmlReader.Create method.
Well, its almost a joke right…
When searching the web for information on this particular, I struck zero…all I could find related to the ISP and the default search provider something. I quickly dismissed them as unrelated.
Then after some time had passed, I found a similar issue, this seemed related and it was a connectivity issue same as mine (If I still had the link I would give credit to where credit is due). This fellow had resolved the issue by adding a missing DNS record.
This made me think, since our tenant has existed since way Before Office 365 existed (BPOS) perheps we were also missing some of the required DNS records?
I checked with my collegues, and apparently we were missing the record as well.
So, if you ever see or get the ‘DTD prohibited’ issue, remember to check the DNS for the following record:
Type: CNAME
Alias: MSOID
Target: clientconfig.microsoftonline-p.net
Info: Used by Office 365 to direct authentication to the correct identity platform More Information
After I added this to DNS, Connect-SPOService works just fine!
Microsoft’s official explaination on the DNS record: What’s the purpose of the additional Office 365 CNAME record? If Office 365 manages your domain’s DNS records,, Office 365 sets up this CNAME record for you. If you are managing DNS records for your domain at your DNS host, to create this record, you create this record yourself by following the instructions for your DNS host. |

Some random document…
Some time, early 2015, Microsoft introduced the ability to move/copy files in OneDrive for Business. This has been one of the major obstacles for using OneDrive for Business as a E1 user without the Office applications installed locally. Or rather, as a Online only user no matter what license. As a long time SHarePoint user and technician, this is a long awaited feature in SHarePoint as well, so now I’m keeping my fingers crossed for this ‘simple’ little feature to appear there as well. (I do not for one second think that this has been easy to implement at all) In addition, the function is quick!
Want to see how it looks and works?
The following table lists the tested and verified behaviour of the Copy/Move functionality in OneDrive for Business:
Action | Behavior | Notes |
Move File(s) | Moves the selected file(s) to the designated target container Retains metadata Retains sharing | Does not overwrite if filename exists, reports back error |
Move Folder(s) | Moves the selected folder(s) to the designated target container Recreates a new copy of the folder Retains sharing | Does not overwrite if filename exists, reports back error |
Copy File(s) | Copies the selected file(s) to the designated target container Recreates a new copy of the file(s) with new metadata Does not retain sharing | Does not overwrite if filename exists, reports back error |
Copy Folder(s) | Copies the selected folder(s) to the designated target container Recreates a new copy of the folder with new metadata Does not retain sharing | Does not overwrite if filename exists, reports back error |
Copy or Move in SharePoint | N/A – ‘Send to’ a predetermined location is the closest we get in SharePoint Server or SharePoint Online | N/A |
How it looks in reality:
Move or Copy a single file
‘
Move or Copy multiple files/folders
‘
Select the target, check the ‘Copy’ box if you want to Copy and not Move
‘
After copying/Moving, you will get a Little reciept in the top right corner
or
‘
If one or many of the files allready exist at the target, they are not overwritten, not even with a new name or new version. You will instead get a note on this and the result‘
‘
Now, we all hope for the same in SharePoint! Until it comes, we all to this ‘simple’ feature say: FINALLY!
None at this time…

Hi SharePoint Online PowerShellers!
This time I will give you a Quick but great function to use if you are working with OneDrive for Business:
‘
Simple solution, great to have, unbelievably efficient…
Ok, this is perhaps my shortest post ever…I’ll just explain real Quick.
OneDrive for Business gets it URL from the tenantname and the users UserPrincipalName. Creating this every time can be troublesome…
This is what I use, a function I created last summer when I was tired of doing them one at the time…
It works even with users that have a different domain in the UPN than what is the tenant name.
This is it:
Function GetODfBURL($UserPrincipalName, $TenantName) # Creates a correct ODfB URL from email and TenantName/OrgName, returns URL as a String { # ConStructing OneDrive personal URL from the UPN/Email address $StrUser = $UserPrincipalName $pos= $StrUser.IndexOf("@") $len = $StrUser.Length -1 $StrUser = $StrUser.SubString(0, $pos) $StrUser = $StrUser -replace "\.", "_" $Orgpos = $pos + 1 $Orglen = $len - $pos $StrOrg = $UserPrincipalName.SubString($Orgpos, $Orglen) $StrOrgNamePos = $StrOrg.IndexOf(".") $StrOrgName = $StrOrg.SubString(0, $StrOrgNamePos) $StrOrgSuffixPos = $StrOrgNamePos +1 $StrOrgNameLen = $StrOrg.Length - $StrOrgSuffixPos $StrOrgSuffix = $StrOrg.SubString($StrOrgSuffixPos, $StrOrgNameLen) $StrOrg = $StrOrg -replace "\.", "_" $PersonalOrgURL = "https://" + $TenantName + "-my.sharepoint.com/personal/" $SiteUrl= $PersonalOrgURL + $StrUser $SiteUrl= $SiteUrl+ "_" + $StrOrg return $SiteUrl } $ODfBURL = GetODfBURL "thomas.balkestahl@blksthl.se" "blksthl"
This will give the URL: https://blksthl-my.sharepoint.com/personal/thomas_balkestahl_blksthl_se
Thats it. Use it or not 🙂

Nope, not this time…
To all of you.
